Coffeen to Shut Down by the End of the Year
Vistra Energy Corporation announced on August 21, 2019 they will retire four power plants in order to meet the requirements of the recently approved revisions to the Multi-Pollutant Standard (MPS) rule imposed by the Illinois Pollution Control Board. The company will close Coffeen Power Plant, Duck Creek Power Plant, Havana Power Plant, and Hennepin Power Plant.
The plant retirements are due to the amended MPS rule, which regulates emissions at Illinois power plants. The rule requires the company to permanently shut down 2,000 MW of capacity. Vistra expects to cease operations at all four sites by the end of the year.
Approximately 300 jobs will be eliminated across the four plant sites, 95 at Coffeen. We are currently in talks to negotiate the impact the decision has on the membership.
